Lost in a Story: How books, audiobooks, and shows gave me the escape I needed this week.
Recently, I have been reading a lot. Between audio, online, and physical books, I’ve clocked several hours a day reading.
As a writer, you want to read — especially in the genre or sub-genre you write in. At least, it’s highly suggested.
I personally like to read in several different genres, as well as some self-help books.
What I’m getting at… time has been passing so quickly lately because I’ve been so deep into a story — whether reading or listening.
On Audible, I found a few romance books that were well-written and funny. I caught myself laughing out loud often throughout both books — even while walking in public (I had an earbud in).
The books were written by two authors who together go by the name Max Monroe. I highly recommend reading or listening to their books. I can only hope to provide others with the same entertainment and joy of reading they gave me.
When you find an author (or authors) who introduces you to their characters and shares their story with you, they hope you enjoy and love them as much as they did when they created them.
Once you accept that invitation, if the characters are well-written, they take you with them on their journey. You become invested in their outcome, and you lose yourself in their world. You feel their pain, laugh at their jokes, and hope for their happy endings. You are vested.
While I’ve been waiting for the beta readers to respond for my book, I’ve allowed myself to visit other worlds — to invest in the outcome of another author’s family (characters).
Other than the two I listened to by Max Monroe, I’ve also read a few other authors’ works. Over the last week alone, I’d say I’ve read and listened to a mix of at least ten short stories and books — possibly more. They were good, and I enjoyed them, but the two by Max Monroe were my favorites.
So… I highly recommend losing yourself in a story. Whether you choose to listen, read, or even watch — allow yourself to take a trip into another world.
Before I close, I want to make one more recommendation. I just watched a show on Netflix (while trying to finish this post), and I can say I was surprised — in a good way. It was a really great show, so if you have some time and Netflix, give it a chance.
It’s called: My Oxford Year.
Let me know what you think. And if you get a chance, check out some books by Max Monroe. The ones I listened to: Oops, I’ve Fallen and Best Frenemies. Worth the time and purchase.
Till next time, I hope you have many moments filled with hugs, love, laughter, and blessings.
Oh… and a few good lost moments in another world. 📚💫
