From Contest Briefings to Brush Strokes: Finding Joy in the Chaos

Wow! My Head Is Spinning

Next weekend is the District 63 Toastmasters Conference, and as the Contest Chair this year, things are about to get really busy for me. I’ve received all the information on the contestants, and last night, I sent out the first of several emails. Today, I scheduled the day and time for the contest briefing and sent out the Zoom invite. Unfortunately, I forgot that Sunday is Easter and set the briefing for 7:00 p.m. Most have accepted, so we’re good to go!

You may ask—what is a contest briefing? It’s when we set the speaking order for each contest and go over the rules. There are four contests, each with 6 to 8 contestants. Friday will be the Evaluation contest; Saturday will feature the Humorous, Table Topics, and finally, the International contest. The International is the only one where the winner will go on to Regionals. With a bit of luck, a strong speech, and real talent, they may even move on to the World Championship of Public Speaking.

Those of us behind the scenes do our best to ensure the contestants can compete in a low-stress environment. Not that competing isn’t stressful—it absolutely can be (been there, done that!). But I find I enjoy assisting or running things, making sure everything goes off without a hitch—or at least just a hiccup.

I’m looking forward to Sunday and meeting all the contestants. The conference is going to be exciting!

On an Artistic Note…

This week in class, we’ve been working on Plein air painting. I’ve always wanted to paint and draw outside, but was always afraid I’d mess things up—that it wouldn’t look, ummm… realistic. But after the lecture and trying it out, it wasn’t so bad! I plan to do more. I may never be as good as Monet, but I’ll have fun—and who knows, maybe one or two will turn out well enough to sell one day!

If you’re interested in learning more about Toastmasters, feel free to message me—I’d be happy to help with information.
And if you’re curious about painting, I can help a little there, too, and would love to share what I know.

Anyway, it’s getting late, and I still have a few emails to go through.
Until next time… may your days be filled with hugs, laughter, love, and blessings.
