Writer’s Block and How I Do or Do Not Deal – Part 2

This week I’ve been dealing with feeling overwhelmed about which project to work on first. I have several books started, creative writing homework, art projects, and I’m putting together a YouTube channel with my sister. Hair-pulling to follow…

I’m thrilled to have so many things to do, but… when I get overwhelmed (even with good things), I tend to procrastinate. I describe it as “there is a main train track, to the right there are four trains coming to the main track, on the left another four trains, and from the center, there is another train or two coming. All I have to do is flip the switch to allow the desired train onto the main track first.” In my procrastination scenario, the switch breaks or is stuck, so until I fix the train switch, no projects are getting completed.

Having to choose something to work on is the dilemma. To me, writer’s block is related to being overwhelmed, which in itself will cause a slowdown, lack of new ideas, or just being plain ol’ stagnant.

To help get me started each day, I have the reminder of my daily goals – incentive #1.

I’ve also occasionally used websites, books, or had someone suggest “writing prompts.” There are also writer’s journals that not only help you schedule your time better but provide writing prompts and timed exercises. These journals help you to keep yourself accountable.

If writing, art, or actually anything you feel is your passion, especially creative adventures, and you want to bring them to life ~ I highly recommend some form of accountability. Be it a friend, a goals group, or self-accountability, find some way or someone to be the voice that spurs you on. Possibly even a reward and penalty system of sorts or take a class. Having to turn in homework, class discussions, and feedback help a lot. I know they do for me.

To close this Wednesday chat, I hope that I’ve helped at least a little. I also offer to be an accountability partner for one full month if you are serious about taking the steps and working on evading, maybe getting rid of, your “blocks, stagnations, bumps in your creative road.” Let me know, and I will help if I can. Also, below is the title of the writer’s journals I spoke of.

With that, I hope you have a full week of creative moments, love, laughter, hugs, and blessings.
